Stop using Google Tag Manager (GTM)!

In my (strong) opinion you should not use GTM at all. 😊

There are many various ad blockers. They are all different in the sense that they block to various efficiencies and using various blocklists.

Some native, some custom for them. Blocklists are just a massive list of “items” for them to monitor and block. But they also catch ads at various levels in the system.

Would I subscribe to Hyros tracking service? β€” NO!

I want Hyros to be great, but I am not getting clear answers to very clear and detailed questions about what it really does.

90% of what is said is a sales pitch. Actually a sales script on repetition. Pitches are fine, but not if they constantly “kidnap” actual discussions.

All in all, I think Hyros is more of a reporting service, but the advertiser still needs to take manual actions on what to do with the data. And if the advertisers does not take action based on that data, nothing will change.

I have been pushing about this, quite hard, in multiple threads in relevant forums. The “closest” I have gotten is that “Hyros attributes based on the selected attribution model”. This, again, that’s about data being shown to the advertiser.

I have still not found information that clearly states it’s an attribution director.

As of now, I see no evidence that Hyros is doing what it claims.

UTM and beyond in online advertising – For better tracking and to avoid losing critical data

In online marketing, having reliable tracking data is crucial to optimize your efforts. You don’t want to lose data or have it overridden with something misleading. This is especially important for cross-platform advertising and omnichannel communication.

UTM-parameters are used to help to track and classify website traffic. Actually, to be more precise, for the purpose of knowing where the traffic is coming from.

The great thing with UTM-parameters is that everyone are using it, but that is also the problem!

Apple Store: What pants are you wearing? Tell us or we won’t help you!

If Apple cares so much about user privacy, why do staff in a physical Apple Store collect data about how I look and how I dress?

This happened to me. I came in with a warranty claim and they started to fill out a form on their iPad which, among other things, included what kind pants I was wearing.

Conversion rate optimization (CRO): The REAL source of the secret sauce

Many of the usability standards that we view as “common knowledge” are actually based on research by Jakob Nielsen and the NN Group, people just don’t know it.

Nielsen (and his NN Group) is the authority on UI, UX and CRO. They have been since the 90’s.

If you are going to acquire knowledge about CRO, focus on verified research results!

Their reports and conclusions is real research by real Ph.Ds, so their methodology (more about this below) is likely to be top notch. They also update past research to ensure that data presented is still valid today.

Google Analytics: URL aggregation/grouping by shortening (not removing) tracking parameters

Facebook, Pinterest and other platforms append (attach at the end) so called tracking parameters. These allow those platforms to efficiently track users.

How Facebook, Google and other trackers “fingerprint” users — A basic explanation

Tracking services “fingerprint” users by looking at various data and method available. The most reliable that Facebook use is appending the fbclid parameter to all outgoing links on Facebook. It looks something like this: https://www.examples.com/some-thing/?fclid=a89d7fa8df…

Worth adding is that Facebook, Google etc are not restricting these methods to ads only. They do this on everything they can.

Using data-attributes avoid ad-blockers and restriction policies

Since I saw that Facebook pixel has started adding data attributes data-fbp-setting andΒ data-fbc-setting in the HTML-tag I’ve been wondering about its purpose.

I think it has to do with the coming restrictions that iOS and Safari (webkit) will implement. But how would setting data attributes help?

How about a convergent point of data storage/communication to get around various limitations?
